LMSA gets recognized at 15th Annual EUP Gala

The Penn State LMSA Chapter was celebrated at the 15th annual Estamos Unidos de Pennsylvania (EUP) gala for the outstanding work this group of magnificent medical students do in the community. In this year's Gala theme of superheroes, LMSA received special recognition. The group was featured as the secret superhero alter-ego "The Justice League". Just as the justice League is made up of a powerful collaborative of outstanding individuals who come together to make a difference, LMSA functions as a powerful force not only for the Latino population in and around Hershey, Lebanon, Lancaster, but recently their reach extended to Puerto Rico Hurricane Victims. We celebrate you LMSA!

LMSA- Penn State Organizes an Item drive for Puerto Rico Hurricane Victims
November 1, 2017
In addition to the many activities LMSA carries out throughout the year, most recently, LMSA organized an item drive for the victims of hurricane Maria, and by partnering with other organizations at Penn State, St. John of Arc School, and the Latino Hispanic American Community Center, LMSA was able to collect a significant amount of items that will benefit many people in Puerto Rico. The Item drive was promoted via a salsa dancing lessons with the help of LMSA member Marian Poley. Special thanks to Dr. Pichardo and LMSA treasurer Melanio Bruceta, who were integral to the success of this item drive!
LMSA Celebrates Another Medical Interpreter Training

This year's LMSA's Medical Interpreter program had a looming number participants. This summer LMSA members trained 35 new Medical Interpreters in 15 different languages. The Lesson was hosted by LMSA's current and former chapter presidents: Luisa De Souza, and Chavely Sanchez. Advisors Dr. Silveyra, Dr. Ramirez and treasurer Melanio Bruceta also hosted part of the training. This year, the interpreter program had a very special addition, as 5 Doctors from the International Physician Medical-ESL Training Program successfully received their certifications. This was a day of celebration for the international doctors, as the certification marks a milestone in their journey of mastering the English Language and becoming part of the Healthcare field in America. Congratulations to our new interpreters!
LMSA Mentors and Sponsors 2016 EUP Scholarship winners at the 14th Annual EUP Gala

LMSA students sponsored and mentored the 2016 EUP scholarship winners. What is better than outstanding medical students mentoring outstanding college students? - Pretty much nothing.  Not only did this year's winner receive monetary support towards their college education as part of the EUP scholarship, but also received the invaluable support and advice from their medical student mentors. To seal the bond, the LMSA mentors had the honor of presenting each of their respective mentees as they were handed their scholarship certificates. Congratulations to the 2016 EUP scholarship award winners!
